We all know that movement is incredibly important to our health—and that it can be a challenge to achieve a healthy level of movement at an office job. Increasing movement in the workplace is a topic that’s drawn much attention and focus recently. But what are the best ways to stay active after retiring from the workforce?
1) Maintain a regular exercise schedule. Your workout doesn’t have to be vigorous: even just taking a bike ride or walk around the neighborhood for an hour or so each evening can be a great way to stay healthy. The great news? According to the New York Times, it’s never too late to start exercising.
2) Join a recreational club. You’d be surprised how many groups meet locally to do yoga, paddle board, play golf, swim, or get moving some other way. If there’s an activity you’ve always been wanting to try—whether it’s scuba diving, tai chi, or underwater basket weaving—now’s the time to get out there and give it a shot.
3) Kick the couch out of your routine. Most people spend the majority of their days sitting—a routine that’s even harder to break when you’ve got the TV or a good book in front of you. Instead of heading straight for the couch, consider placing an exercise machine (or even a Level!) in your living room. This change could make sitting on the couch a relaxing break rather than a rut, and sitting less could mean big things for your health as you age.
4) Start a garden. Look up which plants grow best in your area and get planting! Breaking a sweat is worthwhile when the end result is plenty of fresh produce and a colorful yard. For an additional dose of movement, ride your bike to pick up the seeds and tools to get you started.
5) Be a tourist in your own city. Retirement is the perfect time to take advantage of your city and explore local museums, shops, and hikes. The best part is that they’ll usually be less crowded on weekdays, letting you have your run of the place. Embrace what’s left of the summer weather and #KeepMoving!
